He considers himself a docent who will even open up the cabinets to let guests take a look inside when asked. Charlie himself is a walking encyclopedia able to spout off random bits of information about each and every game here. And while it is a little unconventional, it is historical and educational. Since the beginning, people have been challenging Charlie if this place was a real museum or not. "We had really wanted Pioneer Square, but we feel fortunate that we were put here in the International District because it is a neighborhood and it's vibrant," said Cindy. You've got seven days, and the mayor is coming on opening night." To Charlie's surprise, Shunpike agreed with him - "They called us up and said, 'We've got 150 applications, and we picked ten. "'What we want to do is present an art exhibit in a storefront with interactive, connective works of art.' Which is a long way of saying 'A cool pinball museum.'" Please don't hang up on me before I finish the pitch,'" he said. "I called them up and said, 'Hey, I've got this idea. At the time, they were offering artists spaces in Pioneer Square and the International District rent-free for three months in hopes that they could become a viable business. Then in 2009, Charlie found out about a program called Storefront Seattle which was administered by the nonprofit arts organization Shunpike. "If you are a collector, you gotta keep collecting," said Charlie. He then apologized to Charlie for "infecting him with an incurable disease" - the disease of collecting pinball machines. After collecting a dozen or so machines, Charlie tried to sell back a couple of them from the man he bought them from, but the man refused. Soon, the Martins found that they were running out of places to put them all. The 1976 game "Aztec" (created by Williams) was the first of many. And we’ll be checking out Linda’s Tavern for the first time."I think we bought our first in 2008," said Charlie. I’m also curious about Radiator Whiskey, which I always pass in Pike’s Place. It would seamlessly fit right into a Harry Potter film.įor PAX this year, I have even more places on my list to try, including Rumba, another tiki bar after my heart. You step back in time in this old-world tavern to discover over 200 ciders. (Thanks, Jordy!) Personally, I prefer cider over beer, and I’d never been to a cider house like this one. We discovered Capitol Cider thanks to the Triwizard Drinking Tournament a few years back, hence why you can see my amazing handmade wand in the above photo. You can’t go wrong with the food, either. You’re welcomed by beautiful decor, a fun illustrated menu, friendly bartenders, and an array of strong, rum cocktails (like the name implies). Best Rum Drinks: Navy Strengthįor hipster tiki drinks, head to Navy Strength. While you’re here, check out the wall decor, complete with massive cat photo collages and a funky Patrick Swayze mural. Grab a no-frills drink (think beer or Jack and Coke) and play to your heart’s content. This charming basement bar boasts quite a collection of vintage arcade games and pinball machines. You’ll find the nicest gang of PAX attendees hanging out at Add-A-Ball in Fremont. On theme, enjoy very sweet drinks and shots alongside a huge menu of carnival fare, including corn dogs, funnel cake, and popcorn. It’s all bright colors, stripes, and carnival-inspired camp. Walking into Unicorn feels like you’ve stumbled upon a fabulous dream dimension. You’ll need ’em until you journey somewhere with more substantial food. You also get all-you-can eat free hard pretzels. Sit with strangers at long tables while you enjoy beer on the lovely patio. Visit Fremont Brewing Company for a laid-back brew hall. If you can brave the wait, put this place at the top of your list. If the cocktails aren’t mind-blowing enough on their own, you’ll be impressed by the unique presentations like you see in the photos above with the Banksy Sour and tasteful skull chalice. The whiskey selection floored me, and the cocktails will elevate you to a new level of being. When I walked into this shoebox, I wondered if it was worth the hype (and wait). It routinely pops up on “best of” lists, and it boasts America’s largest selection of spirits with over 4,000 labels and counting. Cheers! Best Selection: CanonĬanon inhabits a teeny-tiny, cozy space, and it’s usually packed to the brim for a reason. (Hi, Jack!) So, we’ve had many a fine drink in this beautiful city, and I wanted to share some of our favorite spots. It’s one of our favorite places, and one of our best friends lives there. For a few members of our tribe, it’s their first time visiting Seattle, so we can’t wait to show them the city.įor Jeff and I, this will be our fourth PAX West, and we’ve visited Seattle for other occasions. With PAX West just around the corner, I’m giddy! For the first time ever, we’re attending with our entire D&D group, and we’re not messing around.
